Users Discontinuing Weight-Loss Medications Put On Pounds Far More Rapidly Compared to Dieters

Weight management involves ongoing approaches.

A recent study reveals that individuals who come off blockbuster weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on shed pounds far faster than those who stop traditional lifestyle programs.

Research printed in a major health publication demonstrates that while overweight individuals frequently drop a large proportion of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"People buying these drugs should be informed of the potential of quick weight regain when the medication is stopped," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain implies a return to original weight within about one and a half years.

Weighing Treatments

The study, which reviewed 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.

Scientists point out that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone generally see a more gradual weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

The Reason for the Fast Rebound

Experts propose the mechanism of the drugs accounts for the amplified weight return.

The injections imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than normal may cause the system to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and could reduce sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to appetite is uncontrolled, making excessive eating a significant risk."

A Lifelong Condition?

Medical guidelines suggest the jabs for individuals with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts contend that, considering the significant potential of relapse, the therapy is often life-long.

This view is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "highlight the persistent character of obesity," akin to managing conditions like hypertension.

Patient Experiences

Individuals who have discontinued the jabs report a sudden return of appetite.

"I experienced a trigger activating and you're instantly ravenous," said a patient.

This difficulty is exacerbated if individuals have not established lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.

Growing Adoption

Recent estimates indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is greater among women than males.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest usage rates.
  • A large proportion access the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

In conclusion, researchers caution that while GLP-1 drugs are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone fix and lasting health benefits likely depends on combined lifestyle management.
