Her Royal Highness's Annual Christmas Service of Carols Honours Unsung Heroes

Catherine, Princess of Wales, is presiding over her annual Christmas carol concert at the historic Abbey, with a congregation comprising royals, celebrities and local heroes who have helped their communities.

The sizable congregation will hear a selection of festive songs, musical performances, and spoken word pieces from stars like award-winning actors.

A Theme of Compassion and Love

The central message of the service, held in the atmospheric historic church on Friday, is generosity and expressing affection towards one's neighbour.

Among the guests will be a couple named the Cordiners, whose daughter died of a brain tumour, and who set up a charity, a charity called Kayleigh's Wee Stars, to aid parents with a youngster facing a life-limiting condition.

"Your efforts, love, and understanding, often discreetly and without words, and without any hope for reward or acknowledgement, make an extraordinary difference to the well-being of people," Her Royal Highness stated in a letter ahead of the concert.

A Steady Comeback

The royal has been undertaking her own steady comeback to the public eye after her cancer diagnosis and chemotherapy, last month delivering her initial major address in two years, in which she reflected on recognising the "selfless, commonly overlooked efforts of carers".

Music and Opportunity

Guests arriving at the Abbey will enjoy performances from talented youth performers backed by the Future Talent charity, established in part by the Duchess of Kent to increase availability of instrumental training.

An 18-year-old named Carys Wood, who is a trumpet player and is from southwest Wales, has been supported by the trust, with grants helping towards instruments, tuition, and transportation expenses - and she said it was "incredible" to be playing at the evening's event.

"Pursuing music is often costly," she stated. She is now a student at the prestigious music academy, and added that "everyone should have the opportunity" to develop their musical skills.

Generations Gathering

Carys's 11-year-old sister, Eliza, who is a euphonium player, will also be at the Abbey. "I never thought I'd be able to play there in front of so many important people," she said.

Within the audience will be representatives of different generations.

That will feature Saphia Turner, aged nine, winner of a young hero award, who produces drawings and undertakes charity feats to raise money for local food charities.

Yuletide Atmosphere and Acts

The Abbey has been festooned with specially made wreaths, with celebrity baker Mary Berry and floral designer Simon Lycett contributing to their design.

Among the musical performers will be Katie Melua, the Westminster Abbey choristers and a maritime folk band from Cornwall, the group Fisherman's Friends, who said the chance to take part was "a dream come true."

This annual carol service will be aired by television on December 24th.
