Roughly 50 automobiles have been marked with what appears to be human blood in the German town of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, according to authorities.
Automobiles, walls and mailboxes were defaced, sometimes with prohibited symbols, they reported in a release.
Law enforcement state they were alerted during the night on Wednesday evening, when a resident discovered that a car in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been covered with a reddish substance.
The substance had been placed in the pattern of a Nazi symbol, they stated.
Police then located multiple other marked automobiles and building exteriors in the adjacent neighborhood.
Nazi symbols are prohibited in Germany under regulations prohibiting the public display of Nazi symbols.
Police report preliminary tests indicate the fluid was most likely blood from a person.
"There is still no indication as to its origin; investigators are currently not aware of any harm in association with the event," they added.
City officials said they were attempting "to solve the mystery" and have requested to the public for information.
An important political figure said the incident rendered him stunned and required to be resolved rapidly.
"This event affects the core of Hanau and reopens the wounds of the far-right violent incident five years ago," he wrote on a platform, referring to the killing of nine people by a gunman aiming at people of immigrant origin in 2020.
